In mid-20th-century Ireland, thousands of babies born in church-run “Mother and Baby Homes” were taken from their unwed mothers and sent abroad for adoption, often without consent, in a system that blurred charity, coercion, and profit. Battle was one of those children. Taken from his mother in Ireland and sold to a family in America, he eventually discovered his true identity through genealogical testing after settling in Maine. Kevin went on to represent South Portland in the Maine Legislature and today serves as Portland Harbor Master. In this episode of The Heart of Maine, Kevin talks with host Michael Connolly about his extraordinary journey—from loss and displacement to leadership and service—set against the backdrop of an unfortunate chapter in Ireland’s history.
